Cuba libre, at last?

We’ve been to Cuba. We plan to turn around and go right back. That’s our intent, to take our “kids” who are in their late 20’s to go with us. 50% of one side of the family speaks Spanish fluently. The other 50% does not. But we all get along like a house on fire. Thus, Cuba is high on the list, and we’re thinking, dreaming, hoping and scheming that it will happen. Cuba is worth every breath you take, trust us.

If you keep an eye on the country, you’ll know that the USA still has the country shackled with sanctions. The United States embargo against Cuba is the only active embargo within the United States which has prevented U.S. businesses from conducting trade or commerce with Cuban interests since 1958. Modern diplomatic relations are cold, stemming from historic conflict and divergent political ideologies. Ridiculous in our eyes. There are ways to help the people of Cuba, by renting places to stay, taking tours and even just doing good. Volunteer. Buy local products, Visit local venues. Be present, but not obnoxious. Note: things change here.

One concern for some who wish to visit is how to get there, how to get around and, most of all, where to stay. Up until not too long ago, our top affiliate friends, Expedia, had properties available all around the island. But, with a recent scan, it seemed like that the property and stays offering was no longer present. Airbnb is there, but we (and a number of travelers) have our concerns about that option. So, what to do? One vendor that we like, appreciate and use whenever we can is Trivago, and, they can offer stays in Havana and beyond. This is really good news, we think. Cuba calls. Canadians and British citizens can generally visit Cuba. However, they need to obtain a visa, also known as a Tourist Card, before traveling. This Tourist Card can be obtained online, from the Cuban Embassy or Consulate in their respective countries, or through tour operators or airlines. Sorry, yanks, you might be out of luck. Complain to your congress-person. Make a difference. Believe us, you will never forget it. But please be aware that things could change . . it can be a fluid situation.

Canada’s Air Transat flies to Cuba, because that’s what Canadians do. Even better, Airbus jets. Click here

Relax. Yes, there was an aroma on this Air Transat flight, butt you can thank a passenger for that.
