Guadalquivir Diary

Did you know that The Guadalquivir River is the fifth-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula and the second-longest river entirely within Spain? Its name comes from the Arabic “al-wādī l-kabīr,” meaning “the great river.” The Romans knew it as the “Baetis. Well, perhaps now you do. And perhaps you might be wondering why we’re featuring it here.

As things happen, by sheer chance, Guadalquivir popped up out of nowhere this morning, ostensibly attached to a music post that we had been reading elsewhere. And, as the fates often supply, this place piqued our interest, and we thought it might do the same to you.

Guadalquivir originates in the Sierra de Cazorla mountain range in southeastern Spain. It empties into the Gulf of Cádiz, part of the Atlantic Ocean, near Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Furthermore, It is the only major navigable river in Spain. Currently, it is navigable from Seville to the Gulf of Cádiz. In Roman times, it was navigable as far as Córdoba. Now it’s easy to enjoy with you and your peeps.

History lesson over, we reckon that it’s a place that you should visit, and then tell your friends. Or even discover it with them at your side. We can never get enough Spain, can we?
