Most of us long for a slow and relaxing holiday. Beaches, plush hotels, food delivered to your door. But, as the world gets bigger and smaller at the same time, there are other intrepid individuals who want to explore the planet in situ. And There are, of course, those who look for something completely different. Our topic here is definitely in the latter category. Have a look at Hashima, also known as Battleship Island. The story is long and not a happy one, but it’s an important one given its tattered history.

Hashima, also known as Gunkanjima (meaning “Battleship Island”), is a fascinating and somewhat eerie abandoned island off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan. Hashima was primarily developed as a coal mining facility in the late 19th and 20th centuries, but it later turned into an horrific place, demonstrating the lows of how humans can treat each other. At its peak in 1959, the island had a population of over 5,000 people, making it one of the most densely populated places on Earth. It was cruel and horrifying. Watch the video, above.
