In the words of our favourite post-punk pop deluxe bard, Julian Cope, “there’s no getting around getting around.” That’s for sure. Like it or not, as travel booms across the globe, the world gets smaller as it gets bigger. More planes. More trains. More people. And more cars, sadly. We certainly can’t blame Google for all of that, but at least they’ve done their part to make the world more usable.
Of course, here we’re talking about Google Maps. Likely each and every one of us uses Google Maps every day. It’s a sound, reliable and smart piece of tech. But what do most of us actually know about the product, how it started and how it got to be the king of getting around? And, most importantly for this post, what tech will propel it forward? If you’re not a driver or have been hiding all of these years, Google Maps provides detailed maps of various locations, including roads, streets, landmarks, and points of interest. It offers satellite and aerial views of many locations, providing a bird’s-eye perspective.
Google Maps Street View allows users to explore streets and locations through 360-degree panoramic images. It even helps users plan routes for driving, walking, cycling, and public transportation. You may grumble about Google’s hegemony, but it certainly makes life easier. Waze is another solution. Click here
