Code Share

We here at Matouring spend a lot of time trying to understand how the travel industry works as it progresses. Often, it looks relatively straightforward. Other times, it looks like mumbo-jumbo, especially designed to confuse us. Sometimes it’s a little bit of both. So, it’s worthwhile having a deeper understanding of the industry in order to get the best deals that we can.

Let’s start with the concept of code share. In the travel world nomenclature, code sharing enables airlines to market partner flights under their own code. Code share flights allow for a wider selection of destinations, especially through a common network of hubs. Efficient and cost effective. Airlines love them, and so will you once you get gist of the (relatively simple) concepts.

But you may ask “what’s in it for me?” First off, these partnerships significantly facilitate your travel experience by allowing you to make just one booking and complete a single check-in for flights operated by two different airlines. That way, your checked bags will automatically be delivered to your final destination, and you will be protected in the event of a flight delay or cancellation. This collective “teamwork” allows easier transfers between airlines, especially for complex itineraries. It also enables access to more destinations without having to fly directly with a single airline. Nice, and it works if you choose the right airline.

Speaking of that, one airline that we like to feature here is Canada’s Air Transat. We’re highlighting them here because they’re not only an excellent airline, but also because they’re very transparent when it comes to codeshare offerings: they partner with a variety of other carriers, which gives you more flexibility. The idea is simple enough in concept, but (in the background) can have a lot of moving parts. (If you want to get into more detail about the process, click here.

Another big plus for us as affiliates, is that Air Transat flies Airbus jets and, as a byproduct of that, are not involved in any of the recent and current on-going issues with Boeing and the timelines for their problems to go away. It’s nice to know that you, as passengers, have alternatives. Air Transat is a good one.

If you need more convincing, Air Transat even have holiday packages. Worth looking into. Click here.

When you can, it’s a great idea to stay with one travel vendor. Air Transat’s “all-in” package makes sense. Click here
