Paris, again?

Yes, Paris, again, but we’re willing to bet that this is not your typical Paris. It is Paris, of course, but one that is so hidden, that it almost doesn’t exist. And it surely isn’t overrun by long queues of tourists. Not to sell it short, but it will be – ironically – a breath of fresh air if you take the time to find it and, even more, take the time to stop and savour what you see.

We wish it was us who were first able to share this with you, but all credit and kudos goes to the indefatigable Tim Traveler. As you’ll discover, just as Tim did, there is a whole new world of the City of lights, only underground. Welcome to the Canal Saint-Martin.

Here’s what you get. Above ground, you’ll have Waterside Walks: The canal’s banks are lined with trees, cafes, and charming bridges, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. The canal’s locks are a fascinating sight, and watching boats navigate through them is a unique experience. But, even better, In the 19th century, as Paris was undergoing rapid urbanization, it was decided to cover parts of the canal to create more space for urban development.

This led to (the subject of this post) the construction of the underground section, which now runs beneath the bustling streets of the city. The dimly lit, underground section creates a mysterious and atmospheric experience. The engineering feat of constructing an underground canal is impressive and showcases the ingenuity of 19th-century engineers. Definitely worth your while when in Paris.
