We’re not much into religion, but we do admire the power of beliefs, especially when its used for good. So when we ran across this monolithic church in the Tigray Region, Ethiopia, we were curious. Not so much that there is such a thing in Ethiopia. It’s all about how the faithful there have created a rather impressive site for such a thing. Abuna Yemata Guh.
Abuna Yemata Guh is a monolithic church located in the Hawzen woreda of the Tigray Region, Ethiopia. It is situated at a height of 2,580 metres (8,460 ft) and has to be climbed on foot to reach. It is notable for its spectacular location, its architecture and dome dating back to the sixth century, and its 15th century wall paintings. Read in more detail here.
It is a trek in the truest sense. When you see the pictures, you may have second thoughts about making the effort, but many people on social media say that the trek can take about a half day, which might be within your limits. If you’re reluctant, think hard about the bragging rights. Reaching these churches often involves challenging hikes through rugged terrain, making the journey an adventure in itself. The most famous is Abuna Yemata Guh, a church perched atop a sheer cliff face, accessible only by a perilous climb.
Once you arrive, the Gheralta region boasts breathtaking landscapes, with dramatic cliffs, deep canyons, and rolling hills. The arid beauty of the region is truly awe-inspiring. Gheralta is a relatively undiscovered destination, offering a chance to explore a truly authentic and unspoiled part of Ethiopia, and for you to find a kind of peace that is unforgettable. We’re sure that the use here of unforgettable is certainly literal.
