Ahh. A sailing cruise . . to prison.

Interesting title, no? All sorts of connotations can emerge from that. The first one that springs to mind is that there are surely hundreds or thousands of travelers who think that taking a cruise is a penance of sorts. Others, though, would be more than happy to stay on a ship full-time, and be waited on hand and foot. We’re somewhere in the middle. (BTW we have lots of Cruise affiliate friends (click here) who will make you very happy.)

But this post is about a cruise of a different sort where, not only does it feel like a prison to some, but it actually is (or was) a full-fledged prison, with all of the discomforts (and worse.)

Situated in beautiful La Rochelle, France, you’ll spend the day in and around the old harbor of La Rochelle on a maxi-catamaran and sail between the islands of Ré, Aix, and Oléron to reach the famous Fort Boyard. Take in the views of the local coastline, relax and enjoy the feeling of the wind and the sea and chat with the crew to know more about local history and sailboats. Sail through the islands as the wind blows and the tides rise and fall. That sounds like a dream to your editor: France and history

Once you’ve landed on dry land, Wander through the narrow streets of La Rochelle. Lose yourself in the charming cobbled streets lined with historic buildings and quaint shops.

There are other fun and diverse activities, too. Climb the three iconic towers (Tour de la Lanterne, Tour de la Chaîne, and Tour Saint-Nicolas) for panoramic views of the city. Why not Visit the Aquarium? Explore the fascinating marine life at La Rochelle Aquarium.
