Indulge us, if you will, here. Some years ago, when your editor still lived in Europe, “New Wave” music was a big thing in that part of the world. There was punk rock, of course and the result that became alternative music, with bands like Simple Minds, Modern English, Tears for Fears, Erasure, Yaz, Duran Duran, ABC, Berlin,Devo, the Human League, Thompson Twins, Blondie and on and on.
Driving home from work on London’s M25 one day, a song appeared on BBC Radio 2 that caught my attention. It was the little-known, but really very good band called Interview. One of the tunes from their excellent debut LP was a smoky, cool and impossible-to-forget tune, “Blow wind from Ålesund.” (listen below.)
With this song rattling around in my head, the idea to feature this city came to mind today. Ålesund is a port town on the west coast of Norway, at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord. It’s known for the art nouveau architectural style in which most of the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, as documented at the Jugendstilsenteret museum.
There are panoramic views of Ålesund’s architecture, the surrounding archipelago and fjords from the Mount Aksla lookout. Picture in your mind frosty nights, slender, twisty roads through almost impenetrable forests. That is what I always have had implanted in my mind – and still do.
OK, fine Mr. Editor. What does this have to do with me, here in 2024? We though that we were on top of travel trends, but only recently have discovered Norse Atlantic Airways. Norse Atlantic Airways AS is a Norwegian low-cost, long-haul airline headquartered in Arendal, Norway.
Founded in February 2021, the airline operates a fleet of Boeing 787 aircraft (for better or for worse) between Europe, North America, Africa and Asia. Its inaugural flight took place on 14 June 2022 from Oslo Gardermoen Airport to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. Click here to book.
What’s nice though, is that they code-share with other airlines, such as easyJet, Aegean, Pegasus, Norwegian, Spirit, Vietnam and more. That not only makes your selection that much wider and much more diverse, it also gives you the chance to enjoy new airlines. To look and book, Click here.
As a final note, your editor accidentally happened to make contact with the bass player from Interview just recently, in Vancouver of all places, where we both happen to live now. We had a nice chat. Karma.
