8 different weathers in one day.

Welcome to Wales. Those who have been will totally and completely understand this post’s title. And it’s all true. But that’s part of the the city of Port Talbot’s charm. We imagine that the first question is where is it even? Port Talbot is a town and community in the county borough of Neath Port Talbot, Wales, situated on the east side of Swansea Bay, approximately eight miles (thirteen kilometres) from Swansea. The Port Talbot Steelworks covers a large area of land which dominates the south east of the town. You can’t miss it.

It is one of the biggest steelworks in the world, but has been under threat of closure since the 1980s, and now that is imminent. The population was 31,550 in 2021 comprising about a fifth of the 141,931 population of Neath Port Talbot. With that coal / mining background, you’d imagine that it’s a rough and tumble place. Yes and no.

Up until a few years ago, mining was the stay of the land in Port Talbot, except that work is closing down. For the traveler, though, Port Talbot itself is a lovely day’s out. We hesitate to use the overused word quaint, but the town is really that. It offers a unique blend of industrial heritage, stunning coastal scenery, and a warm Welsh welcome.

Enjoy rolling hills to one side, breathtaking views of the Bristol Channel and the Gower Peninsula (a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) to the other. Being a hidden gem, you’ll find that travel, lodging and things to do plentiful with reasonable prices, too. Skip the crowds, as well.

If you’re the outdoorsy type, Relax on the sandy beaches, take a dip in the sea, or try water sports like surfing, sailing, or kayaking. It’s all there for you.

The factories are slowly saying goodbye, but the rest of Port Talbot is waiting for you.
