You might be living in a landlocked place, such as Spain, for example, and so you might not give too much though to ferries (even though Spain uses ferries as a matter of of course. But, in in many parts of the world, especially where there are numerous islands or large bodies of water, ferries are often the most practical and sometimes the only mode of transportation. Examples include the numerous islands in Greece, Indonesia, and the Philippines. And not just there. They’re pervasive everywhere.
We often think that building bridges or tunnels across water bodies is relatively easy, but in reality, they can be extremely expensive and technically challenging. Alternatively, ferries provide a cost-effective alternative, particularly for areas with lower traffic volumes where the cost of a bridge or tunnel might not be justified.
So, with all of those obvious pluses, taking the ferry not only makes complete and utter sense, they’re also great fun, even for an afternoon, let alone for an overnight (or longer) cruise.
