100,000 crosses

Some simply believe, no matter the odds. If you’re a religious ephemera afficianado, then the Hill of Crosses is a place that you should seek. Located in northern Lithuania, not far from the city of Siauliai, the hill is the resting place of over 100,000 crosses, crucifixes, statues and carvings places on the site by passionate Catholic pilgrims.

For background, in 1831, Lithuania was not an easy place to be. Yearning for independence from the Russian Empire, the Lithuanian fighters battled with no success against the Russian army, and scores of lives were lost. Many bodies of the deceased rebels could not be retrieved, bereft family members placed crosses at the site of the destroyed hill fort as a remembrance of their loss. A subsequent unsuccesful rebellion in 1863 only resulted in more deaths, and the Hill of Crosses continued to grow.
