The unthinkable is happening in Europe. Yes, it’s true. In Spain, Barcelona will be banning smoking on all its beaches – and the rest of Spain could follow. To be sure, this is a disaster to a large swath of the European population, as smoking can often define being a European. This is big.
The ban, which comes into effect on 1 July, 2022 is designed to protect the environment and ensure the right of citizens to enjoy a clean, unpolluted space, free of smoke and cigarette butts.
Smokers have left five billion cigarette butts at beaches worldwide every year, which end up in the sea and take eons to decompose.
If you’re an avid smoker, do not fret. There will be designated smoking areas. And you can always smoke inside your car.
